Oxbridge Application Timeline 2027: Key Dates & Deadlines

A month-by-month timeline for Oxford and Cambridge applications, from initial research through to results day.

A successful Oxbridge application takes 12-18 months of preparation. The UCAS deadline is 15 October, but the work starts much earlier. Knowing exactly when to do what — and not leaving critical tasks to the last minute — is the difference between a polished application and a rushed one.

This timeline covers the full application cycle for 2027 entry, from initial research in early 2026 through to results day in August 2027. It applies to both Oxford and Cambridge, with notes where the two universities differ.

January–March 2026: Research and Foundations

Start researching courses seriously. Read course descriptions on the Oxford and Cambridge websites, including module lists for all years. Attend virtual open days if available. Begin building your supercurricular profile: start a reading list in your chosen subject, attend public lectures, and identify areas of genuine interest.

If you are applying for Medicine, start organising clinical work experience now. Hospital placements and GP shadowing often require applications months in advance. Begin regular volunteering in a care setting if you have not already.

April–June 2026: Personal Statement and Test Preparation

April–May: Begin drafting your personal statement. The UCAS application opens in June, so having a strong first draft ready gives you time for multiple rounds of feedback. Focus on the three UCAS questions: why this course, how your studies prepared you, and what you have done outside education.

June: UCAS opens. Register and begin filling in your application. Identify which admissions test you need (TARA for most Oxford courses, UCAT for Medicine, LNAT for Law, ESAT for Cambridge Engineering/Sciences). Order preparation materials and create a study schedule.

UCAT registration opens in June with test dates from July onwards. If you are applying for Medicine, book your UCAT date early. Start UCAT preparation 6-8 weeks before your chosen test date.

July–September 2026: Intensive Preparation

July–August: This is your most productive preparation window. Refine your personal statement through multiple drafts. If possible, get feedback from an Oxbridge graduate in your subject. Begin intensive admissions test preparation: work through past papers under timed conditions.

September: Schools reopen. Finalise your personal statement with your school referee. Register for admissions tests (TARA registration typically opens in September). Confirm your UCAS application details. Visit Oxford or Cambridge open days if you have not already.

For Cambridge applicants: some colleges require a Supplementary Application Questionnaire (SAQ) or pre-interview assessment. Check your college and course requirements and prepare accordingly.

October 2026: Deadline Month

15 October 2026: UCAS deadline for Oxford and Cambridge applications. Your application, personal statement, and school reference must all be submitted by 18:00 UK time. Do not leave this to the last day — technical issues can and do happen.

Late October: Admissions tests. TARA and LNAT are typically administered in the last week of October or first week of November. Ensure you know your test date, time, and venue. The weeks after the UCAS deadline should be spent on final test preparation.

November–December 2026: Tests and Interviews

November: Admissions tests take place. After your test, shift focus immediately to interview preparation. Start practising thinking aloud, working through unfamiliar problems, and doing mock interviews. Do not wait for test results before starting interview prep.

Late November: Shortlisting decisions. Oxford and Cambridge use admissions test results (plus GCSE/predicted grades) to decide who to invite for interview. You will receive an interview invitation or rejection, typically in late November.

December (first two weeks): Interviews. Most Oxford and Cambridge interviews take place in the first two weeks of December. You may have 2-4 interviews over 1-2 days. Some colleges may pool you for interviews at a different college. International students may interview online.

January–August 2027: Decisions and Results

Mid-January 2027: Decisions released. You will receive either an offer (conditional on your final exam results), a rejection, or an open offer (no specific college). Conditional offers specify the grades you need to achieve in your final exams.

February–June 2027: Focus on your final exams (A-levels, IB, or equivalent). Your offer is conditional on meeting the grade requirements. This is not the time to relax — missing your offer conditions by even one grade can result in your place being withdrawn.

August 2027: Results day. If you meet your offer conditions, your place is confirmed. If you narrowly miss your grades, the university may still confirm your place (at their discretion). If you do not meet the conditions, you enter UCAS Clearing.
