What actually affects your Oxbridge chances

Oxford and Cambridge admissions are not a lottery — they reward a small number of well-understood factors. Our calculator scores your profile against each one, using the verified requirements for the specific course you choose. Here is what carries weight, and why.

Predicted grades vs. the typical offer

Every course has a published typical offer — A*A*A with an A* in Maths for Oxford Mathematics, A*AA for Oxford Medicine, and so on. Admissions tutors expect you to be on track for it. Meeting the required subjects (for example, Chemistry for Medicine) is a hard gate, not a nice-to-have.

The admissions test

Most competitive Oxbridge courses require a test — the TMUA for Maths, the ESAT for Engineering and the sciences, the UCAT for Medicine, the LNAT for Law, STEP for Cambridge Maths. Performance here is frequently the single biggest differentiator between shortlisted candidates with similar grades.

Your personal statement

A strong statement demonstrates genuine, specific academic interest — what you have read, explored and thought about — rather than a list of achievements. It is the evidence tutors use to decide whether to interview you.

Super-curricular depth

Reading beyond the syllabus, essay competitions, olympiads, independent projects and relevant experience show intellectual curiosity. This is distinct from extra-curriculars and is what Oxbridge tutors weigh most heavily.

The interview

Oxford and Cambridge interview the majority of shortlisted applicants. Interviews reward the ability to think out loud, respond to new information and reason under pressure — skills that improve dramatically with realistic practice.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the Oxbridge chances calculator?

It gives an indicative profile-strength score by comparing your answers to the verified entry requirements for your exact course — the typical offer, the named admissions test, the interview format and the required subjects. It is a planning tool to show where you stand and what to prioritise, not a prediction of any admissions decision.

Which universities and courses does it cover?

Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL, across the full range of undergraduate courses each one offers — from Medicine and Computer Science to Classics and History. The requirements shown for each course come from official admissions data.

Do I need to enter my email to see my result?

No. Your competitiveness score, the requirement comparison and your prioritised next steps all appear instantly. You can optionally request a fuller written roadmap for your course by email.

What counts as a competitive Oxbridge applicant?

Typically: predicted grades at or above the course offer in the right subjects, structured preparation for the relevant admissions test, a personal statement evidencing genuine subject interest, real super-curricular depth, and — for Oxford and Cambridge — interview practice. The calculator scores each of these for your course.
