Edinburgh in a nutshell.
The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1583, is Scotland's most prestigious university and consistently ranks among the world's top 20. It is the sixth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and has been at the forefront of knowledge throughout its history — Darwin, Hume, Maxwell, and Conan Doyle all studied here.

Edinburgh offers remarkable breadth across medicine, sciences, engineering, informatics (computer science), law, and the humanities. Its School of Informatics is one of the largest and most respected computing departments in Europe, and its Medical School is among the oldest in the English-speaking world.

As a Scottish university, Edinburgh operates on a 4-year degree structure (5 for Medicine). The Scottish system allows more flexibility in first and second year, with specialisation coming later. FAQ
Edinburgh admissions, answered.
Why are Edinburgh degrees 4 years?
Scottish universities traditionally offer 4-year undergraduate degrees (5 for Medicine). The first two years are broader, allowing exploration across related subjects, with specialisation in years 3 and 4. This is called the Scottish Honours degree structure.
Does Edinburgh interview?
Most courses do not interview. Medicine and Veterinary Medicine are the main exceptions. Some courses may require additional assessments or portfolio submissions.
Is Edinburgh part of the Russell Group?
Yes. Edinburgh is a founding member of the Russell Group, the association of 24 leading UK research universities.
How does the Scottish fee system work?
Scottish-domiciled students may be eligible for SAAS (Student Awards Agency Scotland) funding covering tuition. English, Welsh, and Northern Irish students pay tuition fees (check current rates). International students pay higher international fees.
