What We Teach
Three Kinds of Project
Every project is the student's own work. Our tutors coach: they help choose the question, plan the work, find the right reading and give feedback on drafts. They never write it.
EPQ
The Extended Project Qualification
The EPQ is a Level 3 qualification that students take alongside their A-levels. A student chooses their own question, researches it, and produces either a written report of about 5,000 words or an artefact with a shorter report, plus a production log and a presentation. It is graded A* to E and carries UCAS points worth half an A-level.
- Choosing a question that is narrow enough to answer and close to the course you want to study
- Planning the research, finding and judging sources, and keeping the production log up to date
- Structuring the argument and editing drafts, with the writing always the student’s own
- Preparing for the presentation and the questions that follow it
Research projects
Research Projects
A research project lets a student work on a real open question in their subject, guided by someone who has done research themselves. It gives a personal statement something specific to say, and gives an interviewer something real to ask about.
- A one-to-one project with a tutor in your subject, from the first question to a finished write-up
- Reading papers and working out what is already known before starting
- Methods, data and analysis at a level that suits the student
- Writing it up clearly, and talking about it with confidence
Super-curricular
Super-Curricular Projects
Oxford, Cambridge and other top universities look for students who take their subject further than the syllabus. A super-curricular project is a focused piece of work that does exactly that: an extended essay, an investigation, a problem set worked through in depth, or a reading project written up as an argument.
- Picking a project that fits the course, the student’s interests and the time they have
- Reading beyond the syllabus with a tutor who knows the subject at university level
- Turning the work into material for the personal statement and interview
- Linking it to essay prizes and olympiads where that makes sense
