Why Imperial?
Imperial College London is one of the world’s leading science, engineering, medicine, and business universities. Based in South Kensington, London, it consistently ranks in the global top 10 and is the UK’s highest-ranked university for engineering and technology.
Imperial is not Oxbridge, and that’s the point for many applicants. It offers a focused, research-intensive education without the college system or tutorial-based teaching model. Courses are typically more structured and career-oriented, with strong industry connections and placement opportunities. For students who want world-class STEM education with a London base, Imperial is often the first choice.
What Makes Imperial Admissions Competitive
Imperial receives around 7 applications per place across the institution, but this varies enormously by course. Computing regularly sees 15+ applicants per place, while some engineering disciplines are closer to 5:1. Most STEM courses require A*A*A or equivalent at A-Level, and many require specific admissions tests.
Unlike Oxbridge, not all Imperial courses conduct interviews. However, for those that do, particularly Medicine, Computing, and some Engineering courses, the interview is a significant part of the selection process.

Most Imperial STEM courses require A*A*A at A-Level, with the A* typically required in Mathematics or a relevant science. Some courses (particularly Computing and Mathematics) ask for A*A*A*. Medicine requires AAA with specific subject requirements.
For IB students, typical offers range from 38-40 points with 6/7 at Higher Level in relevant subjects. Imperial also accepts a wide range of international qualifications.
Check the specific course page on Imperial’s website for exact requirements: they vary by department and are updated annually.
Not all Imperial courses interview applicants. Those that do include Medicine (MMI format), Computing, and some Engineering courses. Where interviews are used, they tend to be more structured than Oxbridge interviews, expect a mix of technical questions, motivation questions, and scenario-based problems.
For Medicine, Imperial uses Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs), a series of short stations testing different skills. This requires a different preparation approach from traditional panel interviews.
Our tutors include Imperial graduates who can provide realistic mock interviews tailored to the specific format used by each department.
Imperial has one of the most international student bodies of any UK university, around 60% of students come from outside the UK. The university accepts a wide range of international qualifications and publishes country-specific entry requirements on its website.
English language requirements are typically IELTS 6.5-7.0 overall (with minimum component scores) depending on the course. Imperial also accepts TOEFL and other English proficiency tests.
For Chinese applicants: Gaokao scores alone are not typically sufficient for direct entry to most courses. Most Chinese students apply with A-Levels, IB, or foundation programme qualifications. Imperial runs its own International Foundation Year for students who need an alternative pathway.
Imperial follows standard UCAS deadlines. For most courses, the application deadline is January (usually 29 January). For Medicine, the deadline is 15 October, the same as Oxbridge.
Admissions test dates vary by test, the ESAT and UCAT both have their own registration and sitting windows. Check the relevant test page for exact dates.
Offers are typically made between January and March, with most applicants hearing back by late March. Imperial does not use a pooling system like Oxbridge.
Imperial vs Oxbridge: How to Decide
Many applicants consider both Imperial and Oxbridge. The right choice depends on what you want from your university experience:
Choose Imperial if you want:
- A London location with strong industry connections
- Structured courses with clear career pathways
- A focused STEM environment without humanities breadth
- Year-in-industry or placement opportunities
Choose Oxbridge if you want:
- Tutorial/supervision-based teaching (small group)
- A college community and residential experience
- More academic flexibility and breadth
- A traditional university city environment
Many of our students apply to both. We help with both applications simultaneously.
