The Complete Oxbridge Application Timeline for 2027 Entry

··6 min read
Last updated:

The Oxford and Cambridge UCAS deadline for 2027 entry is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time. Applying to Oxford or Cambridge is a process that rewards early, structured preparation: a successful application takes 12 to 18 months of it. This timeline covers every key milestone from the spring of Year 12 through to A-level results day in August 2027.

Spring to Summer Year 12: Build Your Foundations

This is the time to start developing genuine subject depth beyond your school syllabus. Read widely in your chosen field, attend lectures and webinars, and begin thinking about what questions fascinate you most. Admissions tutors care far more about authentic intellectual curiosity than a polished CV.

Start considering whether Oxford or Cambridge is the better fit for your subject. The courses differ significantly at the two universities; Cambridge Natural Sciences, for example, is a broad course with specialisation in later years, while Oxford offers separate degrees in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics from the outset.

Read the course descriptions on the Oxford and Cambridge websites, including the module lists for every year, and go to open days, virtual or in person, if you can.

If you are applying for Medicine, start organising clinical work experience now. Hospital placements and GP shadowing often require applications months in advance. Begin regular volunteering in a care setting if you have not already.

Summer Year 12: Super-Curricular Deep Dive

Use the summer to go deeper. Work through a reading list relevant to your subject. If you are applying for a science, try working through some olympiad problems or reading a popular science book that connects to your A-Level topics. For humanities, read beyond your set texts and form your own views on scholarly debates.

This is also the time to start thinking about your personal statement. You do not need to write it yet, but begin noting down the experiences, books, and ideas that have genuinely shaped your interest in your subject.

UCAT registration opens in June and testing runs from July. If you are applying for Medicine, book your UCAT date early and start preparing 6 to 8 weeks before your chosen test date.

September: UCAS and Personal Statement

The UCAS application opens in September, and the deadline for Oxford and Cambridge is 15 October. Your school will likely want your application submitted a week or two before this to allow time for teacher references.

Your application, personal statement and school reference must all be submitted by 18:00 UK time on 15 October 2026. Confirm your UCAS application details well before then, and do not leave it to the last day: technical issues can and do happen.

Cambridge applicants also complete the My Cambridge Application, a short supplementary questionnaire that replaced the Supplementary Application Questionnaire (SAQ), by 18:00 UK time on 22 October 2026.

Your personal statement should demonstrate three things: genuine intellectual engagement with your subject, evidence that you have gone beyond the syllabus, and the ability to reflect critically on what you have read and experienced. Avoid cliches and focus on specifics.

Refine your personal statement through multiple drafts, and focus on the three UCAS questions: why this course, how your studies prepared you, and what you have done outside education.

October: Admissions Tests

Some Oxford and some Cambridge courses require an admissions test, and many Oxford courses no longer have a written test. For 2027 entry, Oxford will use tests managed by UAT-UK (including ESAT, TARA, and TMUA), while Cambridge continues to use ESAT for sciences and engineering. Check your specific course requirements carefully.

ESAT, TMUA and TARA are sat in a single Pearson VUE window on 12 to 16 October 2026, and results are released on 16 November 2026.

Preparation should ideally begin 2-3 months before the test date. Focus on understanding the question styles, practicing under timed conditions, and building the problem-solving skills that the tests reward.

Once you know which admissions test your course needs, order your preparation materials and set a study schedule.

November to December: Interviews

Where your course has an admissions test, Oxford uses your result, together with your GCSE results, to decide who to invite to interview. Oxford shortlisting decisions arrive by early to mid December.

If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to interview, usually in December. Cambridge's main interview period is 7 to 18 December 2026, and Oxford holds its interviews online in mid December.

The interview is not a test of what you already know. It is an opportunity to demonstrate how you think when faced with an unfamiliar problem or idea. Practice thinking out loud, asking clarifying questions, and working through problems step by step.

Do not wait for your admissions test result before you start interview preparation, and include mock interviews in it.

Oxford applicants usually have 2 or 3 interviews of 20 to 30 minutes, held online for 2027 entry, and may be interviewed by a second college as well as their first choice. Cambridge applicants usually have 1 or 2 interviews totalling 35 minutes to an hour, online or in person depending on the college, with overseas applicants mostly interviewed online.

January: Decisions

Oxford releases all its decisions at once, typically in the second week of January 2027, and Cambridge releases its main decisions on 27 January 2027. If you receive an offer, it will typically be conditional on achieving specific A-Level grades. If you are not offered a place, remember that the process is extremely competitive and a rejection does not reflect on your ability; many excellent students are unsuccessful.

February to August 2027: Final Exams and Results Day

From February to June, focus on your final exams (A-levels, IB or equivalent). Your offer is conditional on meeting the grade requirements, so this is not the time to relax: missing your offer conditions by even one grade can result in your place being withdrawn.

A-level results day is in August 2027. If you meet your offer conditions, your place is confirmed. If you narrowly miss your grades, the university may still confirm your place, at its discretion. If you do not meet the conditions, you enter UCAS Clearing.
