The John Locke Essay Prize, run by the John Locke Institute, is the leading international essay competition for school-age students. Each year it sets provocative questions across categories including Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology, Theology, and Law, and rewards independent, rigorous argument. Shortlisting or winning is a distinctive achievement for applicants to humanities and social-science courses.
The John Locke Essay Prize invites students to write a single, tightly argued essay in response to one of a set of demanding questions, spread across categories such as Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology, Theology, and Law. The questions are deliberately open and provocative, and the best essays combine a clear thesis with careful reasoning and genuine independence of thought.

- Start early and redraft. The gap between a first draft and a shortlisted essay is almost always several rounds of revision.
