Why UKMT Challenges coaching is hard to find

The UKMT Challenges sits above the syllabus, so most tutors cannot teach it

A tutor who has only taught Mathematics to A-Level has not met these problems. Competition papers are not harder versions of the syllabus, they are a different kind of work, and coaching them means having sat them. That is why most agencies quietly decline this, and why students who want to prepare seriously are usually left with a past-paper archive and no one to mark it.

What is the UKMT Challenges?

The UK Mathematics Trust runs the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Mathematical Challenges: national, multiple-choice competitions sat by hundreds of thousands of students each year. They reward quick, creative problem-solving, and top scorers are invited to follow-on rounds (the Kangaroo papers and the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Olympiads) that lead towards the British Mathematical Olympiad.

The Challenges are the entry point to the UK Mathematics Trust's competition system. Each is a multiple-choice paper pitched at an age tier: the Junior Challenge (Years 7-8), the Intermediate Challenge (Years 9-11), and the Senior Challenge (Years 11-13). The questions start gently and build to problems that reward lateral thinking rather than syllabus recall.

High scorers are invited to follow-on rounds. The Kangaroo papers are still multiple-choice but harder; the Olympiad rounds (Junior, Intermediate, and Senior) move to full written solutions and act as the bridge towards the British Mathematical Olympiad and international selection.

For younger students, the Challenges are the best way to discover a genuine appetite for competition maths. For sixth-formers, a strong Senior Challenge result is the usual route into the BMO and a useful early signal for a maths-heavy application.

Junior Challenge

Years 7-8. A 25-question multiple-choice paper; top scorers reach the Junior Kangaroo or Junior Olympiad.

Intermediate Challenge

Years 9-11. Multiple-choice, with follow-on Kangaroo papers and the Intermediate Olympiads (Cayley, Hamilton, Maclaurin).

Senior Challenge

Years 11-13. The sixth-form paper; a strong score earns a Senior Kangaroo or a British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 invitation.

Follow-on rounds

Kangaroo papers extend the multiple-choice format; Olympiad rounds move to written proof and lead towards the BMO.

Who Should Enter

Any student who enjoys maths beyond the classroom, from Year 7 upwards. The Challenges are entered through schools and suit a wide range of abilities; the follow-on rounds then stretch the strongest problem-solvers and start building the proof skills the olympiads demand.

  • For the multiple-choice papers, learn when to move on: leaving a hard question and banking easier marks often beats stubbornly chasing one problem.

  • If you reach an Olympiad round, switch focus early to writing full solutions, because the marking is completely different from the Challenge.
