A tutor who has only taught Mathematics to A-Level has not met these problems. What is the BMO?

The British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO) is the UK's premier school-age mathematics competition, run by the UK Mathematics Trust. It sits above the Senior Mathematical Challenge and runs in two rounds of long, proof-based problems that reward genuine mathematical insight rather than speed. Strong performances feed the selection pipeline for the UK team at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The BMO is the olympiad tier of the UK Mathematics Trust's competition ladder. Where the multiple-choice Senior Mathematical Challenge tests quick problem-solving, the BMO asks for full written proofs: a handful of hard problems in number theory, geometry, combinatorics, and algebra, each requiring a rigorous, well-argued solution.

Round 1 is usually sat in the autumn by students invited through the Senior Mathematical Challenge or entered by their school. The highest scorers are invited to Round 2 in the new year, which is harder still and forms part of the selection process for the UK squad heading towards the International Mathematical Olympiad.

For a Cambridge or Oxford maths applicant, a solid BMO score is one of the clearest ways to show you can do the kind of open-ended, proof-first mathematics that university study and the STEP and TMUA admissions papers demand.

Senior Mathematical Challenge

The multiple-choice qualifier most students reach the BMO through. A strong score earns an invitation to Round 1.

BMO Round 1

A long paper of proof-based problems sat in the autumn term. All working must be written out in full and rigorously justified.

BMO Round 2

A harder invitation-only paper in the new year for the top Round 1 scorers, feeding the international selection process.

IMO selection

The strongest performers progress through further selection towards the UK team for the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Who Should Enter

Students who are comfortable and quick with A-Level or equivalent maths and who enjoy hard, unfamiliar problems where the method is not given. It suits applicants to Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering at the most selective universities, and pairs naturally with STEP and TMUA preparation.

  • Open to students in Year 13 and below (and Scottish and international equivalents).
  • Most students qualify for Round 1 through the Senior Mathematical Challenge; schools can also enter students directly.
  • No prior olympiad experience is required, but comfort with proof and rigour is essential.
