Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London (UCAS codes H300 BEng / H301 MEng) is a three-year BEng or four-year MEng programme run by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, one of the UK’s top-rated engineering departments. The course covers solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, dynamics and control, materials, design and manufacturing, with substantial laboratory and group-project work and a final-year individual project. Imperial requires the ESAT (Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics) and does not interview as part of standard selection.

Section 04
Imperial Mechanical Engineering requires the Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) for 2027 entry. The required ESAT modules are Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics.
The ESAT is administered by UAT-UK and delivered through Pearson VUE test centres. For Imperial applicants, two possible test windows: 12–16 October 2026 or 4–8 January 2027.
Account creation, access arrangements and bursary applications open on 1 June 2026 at 15:00 BST. October booking closes on 28 September 2026 at 18:00 BST, and January booking closes on 21 December 2026 at 18:00 GMT.
For international applicants, ESAT matters because it gives Imperial a common academic signal across different qualification systems. In China, Hong Kong and Macau, restricted ESAT dates: 12–13 October 2026 and 6 January 2027. There is no verified Imperial ESAT cut-off or weighting so do not publish one.

It describes the likely format as a shortlisted interview or admissions-day component following ESAT-threshold shortlisting.
What matters in preparation is not rehearsing a script.
Practise aloud with simple mechanical situations: beams, gears, heat flow, fluids, motion, forces and graphs. The aim is to show assumptions, correct mistakes and explain method, not to sound polished.

ESAT performance is treated as a major shortlisting signal because applicants are required to sit ESAT and FOI evidence says applicants meeting the threshold score are interviewed. Academic profile matters because the course requires strong Mathematics and Physics preparation.
The interview, personal statement and reference then help the department test whether the paper evidence matches the applicant's reasoning and subject commitment. In reality, the safest application is consistent: grades, ESAT preparation, supercurricular work and personal statement all point to the same technical readiness.

A strong Mechanical Engineering personal statement should be specific about mechanisms, constraints and trade-offs. Avoid saying only that you like solving problems; show the actual problem, the model you used, the failure you found and the correction you made.
Mathematics and Physics are the required subjects, so your statement should make clear how you use them rather than just naming them. A beam, turbine, heat-transfer setup, robot linkage or repair project is useful only if you explain what changed in your thinking.
Use one or two deep examples rather than five shallow activities. Reflection matters more than volume: what you misunderstood, what you tested, and how you improved the design.

Projects are useful when they show engineering judgement. Choose something small enough to test properly, because measurement, uncertainty and iteration often tell the admissions team more than an ambitious unfinished build.

Other supercurriculars should support the same academic story: Mathematics, Physics, modelling, design, manufacture and reflection.
These are support, not substitute. A reading list cannot make up for weak mathematical and physical reasoning.
Mathematics and physics problem-solving:
Work through advanced mechanics, calculus, and physics problems beyond the school syllabus, then keep a short log of methods learned and mistakes corrected.
CAD, modelling, and simulation:
Use accessible CAD or simulation tools to model simple components, but focus the personal statement on design decisions and validation rather than software name-dropping.
Making, repair, and prototyping:
Safe workshop, robotics, bicycle, electronics, or repair projects can show engineering judgement if the applicant explains constraints, testing, iteration, and failure analysis.
Reading and technical note-taking:
Read engineering books or articles actively: summarise mechanisms, derive a simple relation, or connect a case study to mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, or design.
Lectures, museums, and industry exposure:
Use public lectures, museum exhibits, and site visits to develop specific questions about how engineered systems are designed, manufactured, maintained, and improved.
Programming and data analysis:
Python or spreadsheet analysis can strengthen experimental projects by helping fit data, estimate uncertainty, and compare measurements with theoretical predictions.

Competitions are not required, but they can stretch the problem-solving habits that engineering admissions rewards.
None are required; one or two done well beats five half-attempted.

Section 12
Imperial considers contextual information and mitigating circumstances through its admissions processes, and applicants should follow the official reporting route with evidence early where relevant. The UCAS reference should explain school context where subject availability is limited, especially for Further Mathematics.
Because Mathematics and Physics are central requirements for Mechanical Engineering, applicants whose schools do not offer Further Mathematics can still strengthen readiness through documented independent study, problem-solving and relevant supercurricular work. Mitigating circumstances should not be left until results day where avoidable.
