The British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad (BAAO) is the senior UK competition in astronomy and astrophysics, run by the British Physics Olympiad. It applies A-Level physics and mathematics to problems about stars, orbits, and cosmology, and its top performers are selected for the UK teams at the international astronomy and astrophysics olympiads.

The BAAO is the astronomy and astrophysics strand of the British Physics Olympiad. Its problems take familiar physics, gravitation, orbits, radiation, and geometry, and apply it to astronomical settings: the motion of planets and binary stars, the physics of stellar interiors, distances across the universe.

It is sat by strong Year 13 physicists, usually those who have already met the physics olympiads, and the top scorers are selected towards the UK team at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). Astronomy challenges for younger year groups sit below it as stepping stones.
