What is the BPhO?

The British Physics Olympiad (BPhO) is the UK's leading physics competition for sixth-formers, run from the University of Oxford. Its senior round asks students to apply A-Level physics and mechanics to long, unfamiliar problems that go well beyond exam-style questions. Strong performances are widely recognised by admissions tutors and feed the selection route towards the International Physics Olympiad.

The BPhO organisation runs a ladder of physics competitions across the school years, with the flagship British Physics Olympiad Round 1 sat by Year 13 students in the autumn. The problems are long and demanding: they take standard A-Level tools (mechanics, electricity, waves, thermal physics) and push them into unfamiliar situations that reward physical insight and mathematical fluency.

Top scorers in Round 1 are invited to Round 2, and the strongest students progress through selection towards the UK team at the International Physics Olympiad. Alongside the senior olympiad, the organisation runs challenges for younger year groups that make excellent stepping stones.
