It is the natural first step for a physics-minded student before tackling BPhO Round 1 the following year.

The Senior Physics Challenge is pitched at Year 12 and sits a rung below the flagship British Physics Olympiad. Its problems take first-year A-Level physics, especially mechanics, and apply it to longer, less familiar situations, so students learn to solve rather than just recall.

Because it comes a year before BPhO Round 1, it is the ideal place for a Year 12 student to find out whether they enjoy olympiad physics and to start building the technique that the senior olympiad demands.
