Oxford interviews typically take place at the college you applied to. You will usually have two or three interviews of around 20-30 minutes each, sometimes at different colleges if you are pooled. The atmosphere is meant to resemble a tutorial: the interviewer gives you a problem and watches how you reason through it.

Two masses M and m are connected by a string over a frictionless pulley. What is the acceleration of each mass?

Apply Newton's second law separately to each mass. Remember that the tension T is the same in the string throughout, and the magnitudes of acceleration are equal.

A resistor of resistance R and a capacitor of capacitance C are connected in series to an AC voltage source V(t) = V₀ cos(ωt). Derive the impedance Z and describe the phase relationship between voltage and current.

  • Work through BPhO-style and interview-style problems without looking at solutions first.
  • After each problem, write one limiting-case check and one follow-up question.

  • Do mock interviews where the helper interrupts, gives hints and changes assumptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The current Physics admissions procedure says candidates normally receive two interview marks from their first college, usually from two interviews, and then one interview mark from a second college. Some first-college formats can vary.
Yes. Oxford's 2027-entry applicant guidance says shortlisted applicants will be invited to online interviews in December 2026, and the Physics admissions procedure says all Physics interviews are virtual.
They must take the ESAT and select Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics.
UAT-UK says ESAT module scores are reported on a 1-9 scale to one decimal place and there is no pass/fail score; scores are used alongside other application information.
No. The official course page says applicants do not need to submit written work for Physics.
The standard A-level offer is A*AA including Mathematics and Physics, with the A* in Mathematics, Physics or Further Mathematics. The IB requirement is 39 including core points with 766 at Higher Level and the 7 in Physics or Mathematics.
