What the number does and does not mean

1

A rate describes a group, not you

A rate counts everyone who applied, whatever their grades and preparation. It is not the chance that a particular student receives an offer.

2

Read the definition beside each number

The Oxford rates on this page are single-cycle offer rates: offers divided by applications. Oxford's course pages also publish a three-year average "successful" figure, which is admitted divided by applications. It is a different measure and these figures are not it.

3

Universities do not count the same way

Each university sets its own counting rules. An Oxford offer rate, a Cambridge offer rate and an Imperial offer rate are not like for like, and neither are their success rates. Compare a university with its own earlier years, not with another university.

4

Small numbers move the rate a lot

In a row with about 50 applications, two more offers change the rate by about 4 percentage points. Treat rates built on small counts as rough, and look at the counts in the row.

5

The year is the entry year

A 2025 cycle row covers applications made in autumn 2024 for entry in October 2025, though a minority defer a year. Where a department names its report by two years, such as 2025-26, the row is shown under the later year.

6

One university rate hides a wide spread

In the 2025 cycle the offer rate was 21.0% for UK-domiciled applicants, 7.3% for EU-domiciled applicants and 10.3% for non-EU, non-UK domiciled applicants. The applicant pools differ, so the whole-university rate does not describe any one group.

What this page does not have

  • We hold official single-cycle counts for 4 Oxford subjects (Computer Science; Mathematics and Computer Science; Computer Science and Philosophy; Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE)), taken from the departments' own reports. We do not yet hold a comparable table for the other Oxford courses, and we have not estimated one.
  • Oxford acceptances are shown as a count. We do not calculate an acceptance rate for Oxford here, because the rate we use for Oxford is the offer rate.
  • We hold no college-level Oxford figures on this page.
  • Oxford publishes its own figures for each course on the course pages of the University of Oxford course listing.

How the rates are calculated

  • Offers divided by applications, for a single cycle.
  • Each rate is calculated from the counts in the row. Oxford and its departments publish counts; we divide.
  • The subject rows come from separate departmental reports, so their cycle years differ. The year is on every row.
  • Rates are shown to one decimal place. Every figure is an official published figure; nothing here is estimated or forecast.

Sources and years

Every figure on this page comes from one of these official documents. Rows are counted per document.
